EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard

The objective of the study is to provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics and trends of R&D investments of JRC developed Industrial Scoreboard Companies and address sustainability and competitiveness challenges.
Within Task 2, OPIX is responsible for identifying and compiling the data required to investigate the relationship between R&D investments and sustainability performance. Using text mining and machine-learning techniques, OPIX extracts, structures, and analyses information at scale to identify sustainability indicators for leading R&D-performing companies. The analysis combines sustainability-R&D proxies, standardised sustainability metrics included in ESG reports, and complementary external data sources, enabling the assessment of patterns, trends, and R&D-sustainability links across companies.
In this way OPIX contributes to the potential development of a composite sustainability scoring system and tests the methodology through a pilot analysis covering 100 companies included in the Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. The findings from this pilot are used to refine the indicator framework and support the design of the final methodology for the full-scale analysis. The validated approach will subsequently be expanded and applied to an additional 400 Scoreboard companies, ensuring robustness and scalability of the methodology.
